Why I will not vote (and has not voted) for incumbent VP, JeJoMar Binay

A true-to-life confession (published in the national broadsheet) from his former batchmate at UP and business partner, who happen to later become United Nations diplomat. Seriously, until now, I am really wondering why so many people are pleased and convinced of this man, who flaunts his name's nomenclature is an indispensable triple combination of Jesus-Joseph and Mary. (And does that make him honest, credible and holy? For me, it's blasphemous.) He always boasts that 'fact' about his name origin on his rallies. Now, definitely, we are a democratic country, a nation of free speech and opinion. And we are also a nation who makes it a habit to criticize, condemn and stereotype all government leaders that we ourselves have elected to office.

WHY I WILL NOT VOTE FOR JOJO BINAY
Editorial-Cartoon-September-13-2014
Editorial Cartoon from opinion.inquirer.net

Mon Tim Sharing the blog of a well-respected urban planner who has known VP Binay for a long time. WHY I WILL NOT VOTE FOR JOJO BINAY Nathaniel von Einsiedel The recent columns of Randy David and Sara Soliven de Guzman in the major dailies give us a pretty good picture of what a Binay presidency would be like — it will be a disaster. The problem, however, is that the average Filipino does not read or understand their analytical writings. Anyway, I agree with them a hundred percent, not just because I believe in their analysis, but because I had worked directly with Binay in the past and, therefore, have personal knowledge of how he thinks and does things. And it is based on this that I will not vote for him come 2016. I have known Jojo Binay personally since we were in college at UP Diliman. He was a fraternity brother of one of our neighbors in Area 1 where I grew up. He frequented our neighbor’s house and that’s how we got to know each other. After college, it was already in 1986 when I saw Binay again, when he was appointed by then President Cory Aquino as acting mayor of Makati and later on as Governor of Metro Manila in a concurrent capacity. Because of my job at the Metro Manila Commission, I got to meet with Binay on a regular basis, often assisting him in his meetings with the Metro Manila mayors and senior officials of national agencies. On many occasions, I had to join him on early morning site inspections and even late evening meetings. My working relations with Binay took a break when I resigned from government accepted the invitation of the United Nations and worked abroad from 1990 to 2004. When I returned home, we revived our relationship. From 2004 up to a few years ago, my consulting firm, CONCEP, was engaged by Makati City for a number of projects, such as the Makati Pabahay Project, Makati Development Agenda for the 21st Century, the Jupiter Street Urban Renewal Plan, the MACDA Housing Project, the Barangay Rizal Disaster Oriented Urban Redevelopment, and the Makati Poblacion Heritage Conservation Program. In the course of working on these projects, I had to confer with Binay frequently and thus developed a deeper insight on how he thinks and operates as a public official. It is based on this that I’ve become convinced that Binay is not the kind of president I would vote for president in 2016. My reasons are as follows:

1. He will befriend you if you can help him achieve his personal objectives, and will not hesitate to dump you when you’re no longer useful to him. He is a master of charming people whom he can use to further his personal ambitions. But once they’re of no use to him, or don’t like to work with him anymore, he will readily get rid of them and fabricate a story on the reasons why.

2. He is a congenital liar. He has perfected the practice of looking you straight in the eye and lie without blinking an eyelash. His political ads project a lie. By claiming that he will do to the country what he did in Makati, he creates an expectation that is intended to mislead people. Common public perception of Makati is that of a first world city — high rise offices and condos, glitzy malls, beautiful parks and myriad jobs. But that is Ayala’s Makati, covering only 6 of the city’s total of 33 barangays. He makes people believe that he can transform the whole country into Ayala Makati’s likeness. He knows that is not true. He had no hand in Ayala Makati’s development, and he knows he cannot replicate this anywhere.

3. He wants to perpetuate people’s dependency on him, especially the poor. He doesn’t believe in genuine development that uplifts the living and working conditions of the poor. This is reflected in Makati’s dole-out approach to urban management, for example, its education and health programs. His political ads project the message that this dole-out system can be replicated throughout the country. He knows that the only reason he can do that in Makati is because the city has the biggest revenue among LGUs, all due to the thousands of the biggest firms located in the Ayala part of the city.

4. He wants complete control over all programs and projects. The programs and projects of Makati city’s departments have to be approved by him directly. Thus, in Makati’s annual budget, most if not all programs and projects are listed under the Office of the Mayor, and only he can authorize budget releases. Binay also established a system that consolidates the incomes of all of Makati’s barangays and directly controls the approval of and budget releases for all barangay projects. But look at the majority of the barangays — from Kasilawan, Tejeros, Sta. Cruz, Singkamas, Bangkal, Guadalupe Viejo, Pitogo, Pinagkaisahan, Guadalupe Nuevo, all the EMBO barangays, and even his own San Antonio. There is so much poverty in these areas that no amount of dole outs throughout his as well as his wife and son’s terms of office have been able to diminish much less eradicate poverty. The incidence of poverty in the premier and richest city in the country is appalling.

5. His pro-poor actions are all for show. He actually loathes the poor. On a number of occasions when we were discussing in private the housing projects for the poor, he used the term “salaula” (Tagalog for “uncouth” or “uncivilized”) to describe them. He has perfected the act of conveying his “concern” for the poor by, for example, setting aside time and a percentage of the city’s budget for the poor’s “KBL” — kasal (weddings), burol (wakes), and libing (burial). When we were planning the MACDA housing project, he’s approach to the issue of relocating the informal settlers was to pay them off without caring where they were to be resettled as long as they vacated the site.

6. When we proposed a massive workforce development program to include the poor in the productive milieu and benefit from the jobs available in the city, Binay turned it down, criticising it as “small-time.” But he did not offer any alternative. It was obvious that he did not want the poor to improve their economic well-being and status. He wants them to be perpetually beholden to and dependent on him, and therefore, under his complete control.

7. His management style is 101% patronage politics. There is absolutely nothing developmental in his system of management. He may have introduced some innovations, but these have been mainly for his and his family’s benefit rather than for the good of the people. He criticizes the Aquino administration as being inept, lazy, and slow. But what has he done, as Chairman of the Housing & Urban Development Coordinating Council for the past 5 years, to reduce the housing backlog? What has he done in the barangays of Makati to address poverty? Are the living and working conditions in the poorer barangays any better than before he first became mayor? When my team and I started consultancy projects in Makati in 2004, its incidence of poverty was higher than the national average. Binay was not alarmed by this and, in fact, seemed to be pleased with it. Perhaps because it meant he could easily manipulate the poor. Today, after almost three decades under the Binays, Makati’s overall quality of life, especially in the 27 poorer barangays, isn’t much better. Is this the kind of person who will be our next president? I certainly don’t think so.

6 Ways Medicine in Space is Completely Different from on Earth

Everything’s different in zero-gravity You may or may not want to go to space, but here’s something certain: you definitely don’t want to get sick there. Ask the crew of Apollo 7, the 1960s mission in which the commander contracted a cold, spread it to the other two astronauts and all three of them spent the entire mission trapped inside a cramped spacecraft, sneezing, hacking and griping at the ground. And that was just 11 days in Earth orbit. What about a year aboard the International Space Station(ISS)? What about a two-and-a-half-year mission to Mars. And what about something a wee bit more serious than a cold—like appendicitis or a heart attack or a severe injury? Zero-gravity plays all manner of nasty games with the bones, muscles, organs, eyeballs, the brain itself—never mind the infectious risks that come from sealing half a dozen people inside a self-contained vessel, where a virus or bacterium could simply circulate ’round and ’round, from person to person indefinitely. These are some of the things that will be on the mind of rookie astronaut Kjell Lindgren, who will spend nearly six months aboard the ISS when he lifts off in late July as part of the station’s next three-person crew. Lindgren is not just a well-trained astronaut, but a specialist in aerospace and emergency medicine—just the kind of expert who will increasingly be needed as the human presence in space becomes permanent. “If we want to go to Mars some day,” Lindgren said in a recent conversation with TIME, “if we want to get further and deeper into the solar system, we need to start thinking about these things, thinking about the capabilities we need to do an appendectomy or take out a gall bladder.” There will be no gall bladder or appendix takings while Lindgren is aloft. For now, he and the ISS flight doctors back on Earth are taking only space-medicine baby steps, learning the basics about the radical differences between medical care on the Earth and medical care off it. Here are a few of the most vexing problems they have to learn to solve: 1. Where is that kidney again? On Earth, your organs settle into predictable positions. A doctor palpating your liver or thumping your chest knows exactly where things ought to be. In zero-g, not so much. “The organs may be displaced a little bit,” says Lindgren. “They tend to shift up a little more. The heart may have a little bit of a different orientation, which may be reflected on an EKG.” Other kinds of shifting or compression—of the lungs, stomach, bladder and more—can cause problems of their own. 2. Your bones hate space: Without the constant tug of gravity, your skeleton doesn’t work nearly as hard, which causes it to weaken and decalcify. Astronauts spend many hours a week exercising to counteract some of that, but nothing can reverse it completely. When Russia’s Mir space station was still flying, newly arriving cosmonauts were warned not to exchange traditional bear hugs with crew members who had been there for a while. The risk: broken ribs. 3. Your eyes do too: Astronauts who have been in space for long-term stays often find that their vision grows worse, and it doesn’t always bounce completely back when they return to Earth. The problem is caused by fluid shifting upward from the lower body into the head, compressing the optic nerve and distorting the shape of the eyeball. Eye infections and irritation are more common too—for decidedly ick-inducing reasons. “Dust doesn’t settle in the vehicle like it does on Earth,” says Lindgren. “So things that are liberated, little pieces of metal from equipment or maybe dead skin just float around and cause eye irritation.”

Diretcho and prangka ala VP Binay to PNoy and Pimenel.

VP Binay is really nailing it with his very brief, straightforward and concise letters lately. Days ago, it was his resignation letter to Pres. Aquino with just 13 words (and was bashed with netizens of Aquino’s virtual reply as: ‘K’.). 'Diretsuhanay' via formal correspondence. Now, he wrote Senator Pimentel with a direct- Magpakalalaki ka! ..all via formal correspondence.

And so I say, HAIL TO THEE ALMA MATER! Riverside College (BSN Class 2008). Record breaker emerges as Top 2 for the entire examinees of the Philippines.

Maria Corazon Familiaran, Riverside College dean of nursing, said the school is very happy and proud of Villa's accomplishment. She revealed that this was the first time that the school got a second placer in the board exam. “Our highest topnotcher was in Top 3.”
The Bacolod-based school has a passing percentage of 90.63% this time, with 29 passers out of 32 examinees.

Neurotransmitters from the intestinal microbiota! 'Green-minded' theory proven!?

Yes, you have read it right, a recent study of Mark Lyte involving feces of monkeys reveal that neurochemicals like dopamine, serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) produced by enormous gut microbiota.

Eighteen vials were rocking back and forth on a squeaky mechanical device the shape of a butcher scale, and Mark Lyte was beside himself with excitement. ‘‘We actually got some fresh yesterday — freshly frozen,’’ Lyte said to a lab technician. Each vial contained a tiny nugget of monkey feces that were collected at the Harlow primate lab near Madison, Wis., the day before and shipped to Lyte’s lab on the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center campus in Abilene, Tex.

Inside a closet-size room at his lab that afternoon, Lyte hunched over to inspect the vials, whose samples had been spun down in a centrifuge to a radiant, golden broth. Lyte, 60, spoke fast and emphatically. ‘‘You wouldn’t believe what we’re extracting out of poop,’’ he told me. ‘‘We found that the guys here in the gut make neurochemicals. We didn’t know that. Now, if they make this stuff here, does it have an influence there? Guess what? We make the same stuff. Maybe all this communication has an influence on our behavior.’’

Given the extent to which bacteria are now understood to influence human physiology, it is hardly surprising that scientists have turned their attention to how bacteria might affect the brain. Micro-organisms in our gut secrete a profound number of chemicals, and researchers like Lyte have found that among those chemicals are the same substances used by our neurons to communicate and regulate mood, like dopamine, serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). These, in turn, appear to play a function in intestinal disorders, which coincide with high levels of major depression and anxiety. Last year, for example, a group in Norway examined feces from 55 people and found certain bacteria were more likely to be associated with depressive patients.

At the time of my visit to Lyte’s lab, he was nearly six months into an experiment that he hoped would better establish how certain gut microbes influenced the brain, functioning, in effect, as psychiatric drugs. He was currently compiling a list of the psychoactive compounds found in the feces of infant monkeys. Once that was established, he planned to transfer the microbes found in one newborn monkey’s feces into another’s intestine, so that the recipient would end up with a completely new set of microbes — and, if all went as predicted, change their neurodevelopment. The experiment reflected an intriguing hypothesis. Anxiety, depression and several pediatric disorders, including autism and hyperactivity, have been linked with gastrointestinal abnormalities. Microbial transplants were not invasive brain surgery, and that was the point: Changing a patient’s bacteria might be difficult but it still seemed more straightforward than altering his genes.

When Lyte began his work on the link between microbes and the brain three decades ago, it was dismissed as a curiosity. By contrast, last September, the National Institute of Mental Health awarded four grants worth up to $1 million each to spur new research on the gut microbiome’s role in mental disorders, affirming the legitimacy of a field that had long struggled to attract serious scientific credibility. Lyte and one of his longtime colleagues, Christopher Coe, at the Harlow primate lab, received one of the four. ‘‘What Mark proposed going back almost 25 years now has come to fruition,’’ Coe told me. ‘‘Now what we’re struggling to do is to figure out the logic of it.’’ It seems plausible, if not yet proved, that we might one day use microbes to diagnose neurodevelopmental disorders, treat mental illnesses and perhaps even fix them in the brain.

R18: Seriously, what is wrong with you people!?

Saw this video in my feed at Facebook, and so I tried to watch it not because of the characters but the comments that its was really funny, and will drain tears out of Laughing out Loud. This is a crazy music video which showed nothing but a*s. But on a lighter note, try to focus on the lyrics and not on her behind because its quite true, its tacking about the realities of the modern world like plastic surgery, botox injection therapy and other aesthetics.

Songs of Rice (How rice in Thailand taste like that of the Philippines)

I love diverse cultures and international relations. This topic and field is very delighting for me because I am a dreamer, supposed to be a traveller but because of sickness, got grounded inside my home--literally.

What I like most about this movie is its relation and similarity with Filipino culture. It seems their rice is of the same taste as ours. Thailand is one of the countries I dream to visit, and I think this nation has good and brilliant minds too in the field of mass communications and international documentaries. On the other hand, I messaged the director of this film, The Songs of Rice:

Literally short, concise and straightforward; Big LOL: VP Binay's one-sentence resignation letter composed of 13 words.

From rappler:

Vice President Jejomar Binay on Tuesday informed President Benigno Aquino III of his resignation from the Cabinet through a simple, one-sentence, straight-to-the-point letter.

"I hereby tender my irrevocable resignation as member of the Cabinet effective immediately," Binay said in his letter dated June 22, 2015.

The letter was handcarried by Binay's daughter, Rep. Abigail Binay, to MalacaƱang. It was received by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, according to Joey Salgado, head of the Office of the Vice President media affairs.

Binay was the presidential adviser on overseas Filipino workers' (OFW) concerns and chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDDC). Aquino has already accepted his resignation.

Tachycardia is a heart rate that exceeds the normal range. A resting heart rate over 100 beats per minute is generally accepted as tachycardia. Tachycardia can be caused by various factors which often are benign. However, tachycardia can be dangerous depending on the speed and type of rhythm.

Falling in love with your bestfriend. Take note, it's 'your' bestfriend.

"Best Friend" by Jason Chen

Do you remember when I said I'd always be there.
Ever since we were ten, baby.
When we were out on the playground playing pretend.
Didn't know it back then.

Now I realize you were the only one
It's never too late to show it.
Grow old together,
Have feelings we had before
Back when we were so innocent

[Chorus:]
I pray for all your love
Girl our love is so unreal
I just wanna reach and touch you, squeeze you, somebody pinch me
This is something like a movie
And I dont know how it ends girl
But I fell in love with my Best Friend

Through all the dudes that came by
And all the nights that you'd cry.
Girl I was there right by your side.
How could I tell you I loved you
When you were so happy
With some other guy?

Now I realize you were the only one
It's never too late to show it.
Grow old together,
Have feelings we had before
When we were so innocent.

[Chorus]

I know it sounds crazy
That you'd be my baby.
Girl you mean that much to me.

And nothing compares when
We're lighter than air and
We don't wanna come back down.

And I don't wanna ruin what we have
Love is so unpredictable.

But it's the risk that I'm taking, hoping, praying
You'd fall in love with your best friend

[Chorus x2]

I remember when I said I'd always be there
Ever since we were ten baby.

12 Habits That Set Ultra Successful People Apart

1. They're Composed
Ultra successful people are composed because they constantly monitor their emotions, they understand them, and they use this knowledge in the moment to react to challenging situations with self-control. When things go downhill, they are persistently calm and frustratingly content (frustrating to those who aren’t, at least). They know that no matter how good or bad things get, everything changes with time. All they can do is adapt and adjust to stay happy and in control.
2. They're Knowledgeable
Super successful people know more than others do because they’re constantly working to increase their self-awareness. They vow constant growth. Whenever they have a spare moment, they fill it with self-education. They don’t do this because it’s “the right thing to do”; they do it because it’s their passion. They’re always looking for opportunities to improve and new things to learn about themselves and the world around them. Instead of succumbing to their fear of looking stupid, truly exceptional people just ask the questions on their mind, because they would rather learn something new than appear smart.
3. They're Deliberate
Ultra successful people reach decisions by thinking things out, seeking advice from others, and sleeping on it. They know that (as studies show) impulsively relying too much on gut-instinct is ineffective and misleading. Being able to slow down and logically think things through makes all the difference.
4. They Speak with Certainty
It’s rare to hear super successful people utter things like “Um,” “I’m not sure,” and “I think.” Successful people speak assertively because they know that it’s difficult to get people to listen to you if you can’t deliver your ideas with conviction.
5. They Use Positive Body Language
Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they're positive) draws people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that super successful people use to draw others in. Positive body language makes all the difference in a conversation because how you say something can be more important than what you say.
6. They Leave a Strong First Impression
Research shows that most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to make huge gains in how people respond to you. First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. A strong posture, a firm handshake, a smile, and open shoulders help ensure that your first impression is a good one.
7. They Seek Out Small Victories
Successful people like to challenge themselves and compete, even when their efforts yield only small victories. Small victories build new androgen receptors in the areas of the brain responsible for reward and motivation. The increase in androgen receptors increases the influence of testosterone, which further increases their confidence and eagerness to tackle future challenges. When you achieve a series of small victories, the boost in your confidence can last for months.
8. They're Fearless
Fear is nothing more than a lingering emotion that’s fueled by your imagination.Danger is real. It’s the uncomfortable rush of adrenaline you get when you almost step in front of a bus. Fear is a choice. Exceptional people know this better than anyone does, so they flip fear on its head. Instead of letting fear take over, they are addicted to the euphoric feeling they get from conquering their fears.
9. They're Graceful
Graceful people are the perfect combination of strong and gentle. They don’t resort to intimidation, anger, or manipulation to get a point across because their gentle, self-assured nature gets the job done. The word gentle often carries a negative connotation (especially in the workplace), but in reality, it’s the gentleness of being graceful that gives ultra successful people their power. They’re approachable, likeable, and easy to get along with—all qualities that make people highly amenable to their ideas.
10. They're Honest
Super successful people trust that honesty and integrity, though painful at times, always work out for the best in the long run. They know that honesty allows for genuine connections with people in a way that dishonesty can’t and that lying always comes back to bite you in the end. In fact, a Notre Dame study showed that people who often lied experienced more mental health problems than their more honest counterparts.
11. They're Grateful
Ultra successful people know that it took a lot of ambition, passion, and hard work to get where they are in life. They also know that their mentors, colleagues, families, and friends all played a huge role in their success. Instead of basking in the glory of achievement, super successful people recognize others for the wonderful things they’ve done for them.
12. They're Appreciative
Truly exceptional people are able to achieve so much because they know the importance of slowing down and appreciating everything they already have. They know that a huge amount of their positivity, grit, and motivation comes from their ability to stay grounded and appreciate the opportunities that life has given them thus far.
Bringing It All Together
These habits can make any of us more successful if we use them every day. Give them a try and see where they take you.

There's this one friend....

1. People who are inconsistent in the way they treat you.
2. People who treat you differently from how they treat their other friends.
3. People who do not know how to be thankful.
4. People who do not give back.
5. People who make you feel like you need to impress them.
6. People who only text/call you when they need something from you.
7. People who don’t invite you to their weekend activities.
I love this post. It is beyond being subtle in describing some friends out there. But I almost fell off my chair when I saw a comment from a reader:

Okay, so I realize he has a point too. Maybe the author of the blog was just missing a platonic relationship with the rest of mankind. Or maybe he was just aloof or depressed.
Got this from: http://thoughtcatalog.com/lenna-son/2014/02/7-types-of-friends-you-need-to-reject-from-your-life/

Don't judge a movie by its poster; Intriguing, Sexy and hilarious movie. R18: The Little Death.

I was intrigued by the poster of this movie. It was graphic in the sense that it’s an illustration of a human hand, onto performing a gesture. Hilariously funny, quite ridiculous but in a romantic way, kinda’ weird and sensual too.

The secret lives of five suburban couples living in Sydney reveal both the fetishes and the repercussions that come with sharing them. Director: Josh Lawson Writer: Josh Lawson Stars: Bojana Novakovic, Damon Herriman, Josh Lawson

Heres a trailer, really hilarious. R18.

An Incident Report (IR) may save your bad day at the railway.

When in Manila-- MRT is a tourist attraction for someone from the province. I, myself had my Manolo Days share of this experience. When I stayed at Manila for 2 months last 2009, I had to find means for faster transportation and exploration of the the city. MRT came first of my bucket list. Long lines in purchasing tickets, but seems to be in an affordable P15 price that time. Long lines are not over until you pass the security counters going to the train’s waiting bay area. Sadly, my first experience was at Taft Avenue and it was crazy and smelly. We were like sardines stucked inside a small can, and not to mention, everyone’s body odor just keep on mixing and flooding the airconditioning system. Nevertheless, it was indeed fast because there’s no traffic within the railway system. I also tried LRT with my friend, Wella and our first time was horrible--it was a lax day, without much passengers but we were lost! We were supposed to go to Bambang but we waited for the train at the wrong side. I had my share of derailments too, and it was scary.

Since 2012, lot of ranting against MRT services have made it through mainstream media. There were railway accidents, derailments, trains stucked in the middle of EDSA and the neverending long lines just won't cut off. So, I guess the government had to find some solution to this problem.  Sadly, their recent solution seems to be... nonsense? I think it's inferior to think (that the MRT) that by issuing Incident Report to affected customers will solve the issue. Traffic is indeed a major problem in the megacity and the MRT and LRT are dubbed to be the fastest mode of transportation. Hence, enough attention should be given, and a collaborative effort between local city officials and MMDA should embark.

A friend of mine at Manila shared this post (below), which was interesting enough to be the mother of this post / commentary.

Meet my old friend, Mr. Serotonin. It has been a while since we've parted last year.

Serotonin is an important brain chemical that helps to elevate your mood and stop you from feeling down or depressed. While there are chemical ways to increase your serotonin levels, there are also numerous natural ways too. Below is a discussion of some of the natural ways that you can boost your serotonin levels to get feeling happy, fulfilled, and energized again.

Boosting Serotonin Through Diet

  1. Understand the serotonin/food myths. Unfortunately, there are a lot of myths surrounding food and increased levels of serotonin. These myths include:
  2. Shun the simple carbs and embrace the complex carbs. Complex carbohydrates are absorbed by the body differently than simple carbohydrates. Simple carbs like white rice and white bread raise your blood levels quickly, causing a spike in insulin, which drops after a while. Complex carbs are absorbed more slowly by the body and therefore avoid the massive peaks and troughs brought upon by simple carbs.
  3. Avoid caffeinated foods, especially energy drinks. Caffeine suppresses serotonin, which could also help explain why it's a hunger suppressant as well. Energy drinks contain large amounts of sugar, which the body processes quickly, but which produce an energy-zapping low after the insulin has finished surging. If you have to drink caffeinated products, wait until after you've eaten, doctors recommend.
  4. Eat healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are hypothesized to affect the functionality of serotonin in the brain. People with low serotonin levels commonly have low DHA levels, which is an essential building block in the brain, and which needs to be replenished with foods such as fish oils, which are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Look for omega-3 fats in:
  5. Eat dark chocolate. Eating dark chocolate improves serotonin levels partly because of resveratrol. Resveratrol boosts both endorphins and serotonin levels. Remember to reach for dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate, as milk chocolate contains far less cocoa (the stuff that produces serotonin) than dark chocolate.
  • Foods rich in tryptophan automatically boost serotonin. This is false. Most foods that contain tryptophan, an amino acid, compete with other amino acids to be absorbed by the body's transport system.[1] Eating a lot of turkey, which is rich in tryptophan, will not automatically give you more serotonin.
  • Eating a lot of banana will automatically boost serotonin. Bananas do contain serotonin. That serotonin, however, is unable to cross the blood-brain barrier and be absorbed by humans.[1]
  • Complex carbs include:
  • Simple carbs include:
  • Legumes like peas and lentils
  • Whole grain breads
  • Whole grain pastas
  • Brown rice
  • Starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes and parsnips
  • White bread
  • White rice
  • "Normal" pasta
  • Cakes, candies, and other refined sugar products
  • Fish, such as salmon, and fish oils
  • Nuts, seeds and seed oils, such as flax seed oil

Boosting Serotonin in Other Ways

  1. Exercise regularly. Exercise is a great way to boost your serotonin levels.[1] The results are clear: exercise causes an increase in tryptophan, which is a precursor to serotonin. The tryptophan persists well after exercising is finished, suggesting that mood elevation may be present for hours after the exercising has finished.
  2. Get enough light. Light probably helps serotonin synthesis. Research has found a positive correlation between serotonin synthesis and total hours of sunlight during the day.[1] In postmortems of humans, serotonin levels are higher during the summer months than the winter months.[8] Getting a better mood could be as easy as opening the curtains in your otherwise dark room.
  3. Invest in massage. Several studies show that massage therapy helps cut down the stress hormone cortisol while boosting serotonin levels and increasing dopamine.[10][11] This double-pronged benefit makes massage particularly valuable.
  4. Understand that stress may interfere with serotonin. Prolonged periods of stress can deplete serotonin levels.[12] Serious and systematic stress can have an impact on the body's ability to produce and synthesize serotonin. This means that you should stay away from stressful situations as much as possible, and find healthy ways to deal with stress once it comes your way.
  5. Relive happy memories. Though it may sound corny, reliving happy times may be enough to give your brain a serotonin boost.[9] This may directly increase serotonin levels and keep you from fixating on less happy times, if you are prone to depression. The inability to think of happier times is called "state dependent recall." If you can't think of happier times, try talking to friends or family and looking at old journals or pictures.
  • Work out in at intensity levels with which you are familiar. Consistent serotonin release is linked with exercise that people feel comfortable with, not exercise that pushes people off the edge, an English study has found.[7]
  • If you can't find the time to exercise regularly, try walking or 30 minutes to an hour per day. At the very least, this moderate exercise will help burn calories and boost tryptophan levels, causing an increase in serotonin.
  • Get natural light during the day, not artificial light during the night. Natural, daytime sunlight is better at giving you serotonin than artificial LED, fluorescent, or UV light.[9] Getting artificial light, especially at night, has the added disadvantage of blocking melatonin production, which helps your body get a good night's sleep.
  • If confronted with lifestyle stress, try practicing:
  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Self-expression (art)

Tips

  • Eating healthy, exercising, and maintaining an optimistic outlook can do wonders for boosting your serotonin. You don't necessarily need drugs to boost serotonin.

Warnings

  • Talk to your doctor if you are seriously depressed or inexplicably saddened. You may have a serious condition that needs medical intervention and/or drugs.

Meet the Mormons. Meet the singer. Listen to the song.

Everyone plays a piece, and there are melodies in each one of us; Life-- it’s glorious. (OST: Meet the Mormons)

This song summarizes the devotion and experience of our brothers and sisters who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At last, a song that’s so much pleasing to the ears, so calm, inspiring and relaxing. Indeed, no matter what distinction or reclassification of belief we have,  faith believes in unity and importance of individuality for a common goal. This makes life glorious indeed. We just have to discover what part are we going to share in this journey we call life.

I was about to sleep and I saw this song on my youtube recommendations pane. Yes, I am a David Archuleta fan, and this song is a lullaby for the soul. Its very short yet it is soothing to the ears and has a touching message. This is for the Meet the Mormons documentary which tackles life and experiences of our brothers who are we commonly term as mormons.

Meet the Mormons is a feature-length documentary that examines the very diverse lives of six devout members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Filmed on location and across the globe, Meet the Mormons takes viewers on a journey into the day-to-day realities of individuals living in the U.S., Costa Rica, Nepal and beyond. From their individual passions to their daily struggles, each story paints a picture as rich and unique as the next while challenging the stereotypes that surround the Mormon faith. The film will appear in theaters across the United States beginning on October 10th, 2014. All net proceeds from the film will go to charity.

Meanwhile, the lyrics is very moving:

There are times when
You might feel aimless
And can't see the places
Where you belong
But you will find that
There is a purpose
It's been there within you
All along
And when you're near it
You can almost hear it

Its like a symphony
Just keep listening
And pretty soon you'll start
To figure out your part
Everyone plays a piece
And there are melodies
In each one of us
Oohhh its glorious

And you will know how
To let it ring out
As you discover
Who you are
Others around you
Will start to wake up
To the sounds that are
In their hearts
It's so amazing
What we're all creating

And as you feel
The notes build
Higher
You will see

After dinner, here’s a very peculiar dessert: Insidious - 3 (2015).

Insidious according to google is (adj) proceeding in a gradual, subtle way, but with harmful effects. treacherous; crafty. Also,  beguiling but harmful.

This movie is the third sequel of its famous and successful startups. A horror movie that invests much on  shocking and catching the audiences off guard. The story revolves around some bad spirits that aren't peaceful to wherever they are, and they tend to cause harm to the living. It seems to be an awkward choice of dessert after dinner huh? I’m just into very drastic movie genre selections lately.

Director: Leigh Whannell
Stars : Dermot Mulroney, Stefanie Scott, Angus Sampson
Description: A prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family that reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.

According to commonsensemedia, Parents need to know that Insidious: Chapter 3 is a prequel to Insidious (2010) and Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013), with returning stars Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, and Leigh Whannell. There's tons of spooky stuff -- mainly well-timed jump-scares, plus images of a scary demon attacking a teen girl and a psychic fighting with the same demon. The teen girl is hit by a car and roughed up quite a bit while wearing casts on both legs. Knives are wielded, but only a little blood is shown. Infrequent language includes one use of "f--king," one "bitch," and a few uses of "ass," plus a middle finger gesture. A teen boy has a crush on the teen heroine, but nothing comes of it. There's a joke about two teen girls being lesbians. Like most horror sequels, it's not as good as the original, but it provides enough tingles that it should be a fairly sizable draw for teen horror hounds.

The aforementioned site adds- On the downside, like the second movie, Insidious: Chapter 3 doesn't have much new to offer, and virtually all of the scares are of the jump-shock variety, with monsters appearing suddenly -- and frequently shrieking as well.

Lost in space, emerged out of a dirty lake.

I did not get the chance to watch this film at the cinema, but it's a good thing a lot of HD copies are uploaded online. Well, this entire films revolved around the story (or shall I say the epic space adventure) or just a few people. Basically Gravity is about american astronauts in outer space who were unexpectedly warned by the ground command post to abandon its mission because of the ill effects of a Russian mishap on the other side of space, involving their satellites. In an attempt to commence the evacuation or escape fast, they all end up on a freaking awful situation--literally lost in space. Well, then some of them die (actually all of them except the lead female star Sandra Bullock), who sought refuge from an abandoned Chinese space station and disembarked her way to the earth’s atmosphere. What is horrifying here is the freaking parachute that was attached to her escape vehicle--it turned out it won’t let Dr. Ryan leave the outside world. To add, she had a bad dream of Matt beside her on her near death moments. And who could ever forget the arf arf and all the woof woof barking she did? I find it awfully nonsense. Painfully, she plunged all the way down to a lake with frogs, and I thought she could have died from drowning, yet managed to escape a near death expo from outer space. In the end, she emerged out of the water, savouring the earth and air and seems to be elated that she is still alive. Hmm, 7.5/10 for me. I just don't know, it feels like there’s something wrong with this movie. Maybe the characters were just so few. The lesson of the story: Learn chinese language and writing; coz’ if she did, it could have saved her from a painful dump into the lake. Buddha was there watching her all the time.

Summary:

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness.

So it’s originally a Japanese comic strip, adapted by the Taiwanese, and later by Koreans and translated by Filipinos. LOL

A bit of history first: It Started with a Kiss (Chinese: ęƒ”ä½œåŠ‡ä¹‹å»; pinyin: ƈzuĆ²jĆ¹ zhÄ« wěn) is a Taiwanese drama starring Joe Cheng,Ariel Lin and Jiro Wang of Fahrenheit. It was based on the first 10 volumes of the Japanese manga series Itazura na Kiss (悤ć‚æć‚ŗ惩ćŖKiss, Mischievous Kiss) written by Kaoru Tada. It was produced by Comic Productions and directed by Chu Yu-ning .

It was broadcast on free-to-air China Television (CTV) (äøč¦–) in Taiwan from 25 September 2005 to 12 February 2006, every Sunday at 22:00 and cable TV Gala Television (GTV) Variety Show/CH 28 (八大ē¶œåˆå°) 31 September 2005 to 18 February 2006, every Saturday from 21:30 to 23:00.

It is the second live-action television adaptation following the Japanese adaptation also titled Itazura na Kiss and followed by its sequel They Kiss Again in 2007 and South Korean adaptation Playful Kiss in 2010. It Started With a Kiss also aired on Hawaii's KIKU Television weekly on Saturdays at 6:00.

Seriously, I really enjoyed watching this asian comic drama. Its very funny, quite of a nonsense but you'll end up laughing. Also, it was dubbed by filipinos in its Philippine airing so a lot of pinoys can already relate and understand. I watched the series one boring night and still, it made me laugh. Here’s my facebook post:

By the way, these are their fanpages:

Father's Day coffee.

Last summer, pap’s got an extra tall coffee (for free) from SB. He must have kept that cup, so I’ll find it this Father’s Day. (or maybe, I’ll just brew him one).

I have already published an early father’s day blog for my father last June 15, after seeing from Twitter that #FathersDay is trending. So, just to keep the vibe on, and to be one with the world in celebrating Father’s Day, I will find that SB cup which I suspect was kept unnoticed–as souvenir.
Coffee has become a symbol within many filipino families. As one commercial says, there are lot of good coffee, but there’s this ‘great taste’ one. That is how I describe my father. He’s like a coffee. Not that he’s hot, dark or strong smelling like cafe americano but, like other dads out there, he is very much not uncommon. He smokes, he drinks, he laughs hard, he eats a lot and he has unregulated serum glucose levels. (I know your dads have mostly the same issues though). However, like the ‘great taste’ coffee commercial, my father is unique. As I have said before, he is a superhero, a mentor, a provider and a whole lot more. He is like a coffee that you cannot buy from a department store. (Well, I dare you to find Nestor’s coffee and you’ll get a good prize!). He is just like most fathers out there. He is not ashamed to walk on just short shorts, because he thinks he’s superman. I told you, he’s a superhero.)
And being that kind of coffee he is, I won’t trade him for a Starbucks coffee, even a Venti hot chocolate, my favorite drink. Lastly, ssshhhh coz’ he doesn’t know I am blogging about him. He might be very famous in the net now, for what I have done. Peace yo’! Happy Father’s day Papa

Better version: All of Me - John Legend (Cover By Daryl Ong)

I think this version that I found on Youtube is better than the original. Well, just saying. Meanwhile Daryl Ong is a product of numerous local singing contests, to which The Voice PH of ABS-CBN was the most celebrated one. Great voice, nice talent and awesome technique, I must say. Too bad I'm not good in singing, or it is surely better that way.

Angels and Demons: Classic yet unorthodox; Thought provoking yet untrue.

I was bored, and in an attempt to learn classical or medieval literature, I ended up exploring the triumphs and conspiracies thrown against the world's major religion. During lag times, left alone in my room, I developed a hobby of logging into my free HOOQ account, and thanks to GlobePH (Globe Telecom / Tattoo) for the unlimited movies. However, weird as it sounds, I was quite on the historical theme and conspiracy issues lately, so I decided to watch again Ron Howard's, "Angels and Demons", starred by Tom Hanks, which is an adaptation of author Dan Brown's popular book. Mr. Brown who also wrote "The Da Vinci Code" and "Inferno" is one of my admired authors. I admit, I was (and still) interested in reading science fictions and documentaries tackling about conspiracy theories, catholicism and history. These themes are captivating and sends a thrill to the bones, it makes the readers or viewers analyze and even provoke you to conduct research thereafter. What is important (for me) is that whatever we learn, watch or study, we still keep our values and morality in place. There will always be an issue of sensitivity and morality when it comes to personal choices but ‘respect’ comes in the middle of the discussion. After all, each one of us is entitled of self expression.
Watching A&D again on a rainy aftee. #DanBrown #novel #AandD #HD #streaming

It is indeed nostalgic to watch this movie again, although I can recall viewing much of the movie highlights and trailers online, about half a decade ago. This movie had so much criticism and blatant prohibition, which I guess just added to the audience adrenaline to wait and watch for its release last 2009.

Summary from megashare.sc states: Despite his notorious relationship with the Church, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is once again called upon to decipher the clues to a catastrophic conspiracy. The Pope has died, and before conclave can begin to determine his successor, the four preferitti (primary hopefuls for the papacy) are kidnapped. An ominous threat of their hourly demise, along with the complete annihilation of Vatican City, is issued as an elaborate revenge scheme for a persecuted group known as the Illuminati. With their meager time limit steadily counting down, Langdon, accompanied by beautiful physicist Vittoria Vetra, must travel throughout Rome to unravel the carefully hidden signs that will lead them to a terrifying adversary, a harrowing discovery, and the shocking truth

Angels & Demons is a 2009 American thriller film directed by Ron Howard and based on Dan Brown's novel of the same name. It is the sequel to the 2006 film, The Da Vinci Code, also directed by Ron Howard. The novel was published first and The Da Vinci Code followed it. Filming of Angels & Demons took place in Rome, Italy, and the Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California.
Tom Hanks reprises his role as Professor Robert Langdon. Producer Brian Grazer, composer Hans Zimmer and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman also return, with David Koepp coming on board to help the latter. As of 2015, the film remains Hanks' only live-action sequel. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angels_%26_Demons_(film)

My favorite character of the story, awkwardly, is the carmelengo himself, Ewan McGregor. The role as the Vatican’s  carmelengo means that he is the    administrator of the property and revenues of the Holy See. Formerly, his responsibilities included the fiscal administration of the Patrimony of St. Peter. As regulated in the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus, the Camerlengo is always a Cardinal, though this was not the case prior to the 15th century, according to the article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camerlengo_of_the_Holy_Roman_Church . He was so good at his role, that it was so convincing. Later towards the end of the movie, its a surprise that he was the villain although he seem to have faked the heroic helicopter jump to save Vatican from undue annihilation. For Dan Brown, as always, I think he wrote a very captivating novel which made it to the silver screen.

On the other hand, Prospect Magazine of UK commented:  One online article says: As a believer in the enjoyably awful, I would recommend this book wholeheartedly if I could. But it is mainly just awful. Nevertheless it is still almost worth reading. In the publishing world they have a term, “pull line,” which means the few words of apparent praise that you can sometimes pull out of a review however hostile. Let me supply that pull line straight away, ready furnished with quotation marks: “The author of The Da Vinci Code has done it again.”, as published in their website: http://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/arts-and-books/dan-brown-inferno-clive-james-da-vinci-code

By the way, I am a Catholic, and will always be a believer and follower of the doctrines of the Roman Catholic Church-- well, to the best that I can. I watched this movie online through my megashare.sc account, dedicated to free video streaming.
